Mama’s Classic Cornbread Dressing
A Southern favorite, this comforting cornbread dressing is rich, savory, and packed with flavor—perfect for holiday gatherings or any cozy family meal.
Ingredients:
- 6 cups crumbled cornbread (homemade or store-bought)
- 2 cups chopped onions
- 2 cups chopped celery
- ½ cup butter
- 2–3 cups chicken broth (adjust to your desired consistency)
- 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 1 tsp poultry seasoning
- 1 tsp ground sage (optional but traditional)
- 1 tsp salt (or to taste)
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp baking powder (optional, for a lighter texture)
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Cornbread
If you’re not using leftover cornbread, bake a pan of your favorite recipe and let it cool completely.
Crumble the cornbread into a large mixing bowl until you have fine, even pieces.
Step 2: Sauté the Vegetables
In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
Add the chopped onions and celery, and cook until tender and aromatic, about 7–10 minutes.
Step 3: Combine the Dressing Mixture
Pour the sautéed vegetables and their butter into the bowl with the crumbled cornbread.
Stir in the beaten eggs, poultry seasoning, sage (if using), salt, pepper, and baking powder.
Gradually add chicken broth, mixing gently until the dressing is well-moistened but not soupy.
Step 4: Bake the Dressing
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Transfer the mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish and spread evenly.
Bake uncovered for 45–55 minutes, or until golden on top and firm in the center.
Tips for Success:
- Add meat: Stir in chopped cooked chicken or turkey for a heartier dish.
- Adjust moisture: Use more or less broth depending on your texture preference.
- Boost flavor: Mix in a bit of turkey drippings or a spoonful of cream of chicken soup for extra richness.
