Classic Sponge Cake

A light, airy, and elegant cake—perfect on its own or as a base for layered desserts.


Ingredients:

  • 4 eggs
  • 150 g sugar
  • 150 g all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 100 g butter, melted
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  1. Icing sugar (for decoration)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and flour a 24 cm (9-inch) round cake pan.
  2. Separate the eggs.
    In a large bowl, whisk the egg yolks with the sugar until the mixture becomes pale and creamy.
  3. Add dry ingredients.
    Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt into the yolk mixture. Stir in the melted butter and vanilla extract until fully combined.
  4. Beat the egg whites.
    In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites with a pinch of salt until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the egg whites into the batter, being careful not to deflate them.
  5. Bake the cake.
    Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool and decorate.
    Let the cake cool before removing it from the pan. Dust the top with icing sugar before serving.
