Classic Sponge Cake
A light, airy, and elegant cake—perfect on its own or as a base for layered desserts.
Ingredients:
- 4 eggs
- 150 g sugar
- 150 g all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 100 g butter, melted
- 1 pinch of salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Icing sugar (for decoration)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and flour a 24 cm (9-inch) round cake pan.
- Separate the eggs.
In a large bowl, whisk the egg yolks with the sugar until the mixture becomes pale and creamy. - Add dry ingredients.
Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt into the yolk mixture. Stir in the melted butter and vanilla extract until fully combined. - Beat the egg whites.
In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites with a pinch of salt until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the egg whites into the batter, being careful not to deflate them. - Bake the cake.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. - Cool and decorate.
Let the cake cool before removing it from the pan. Dust the top with icing sugar before serving.
