Ham and Cheese Sticks

Ham and Cheese Sticks
Ingredients:
- 8 slices of high-quality ham (about 100g / 3.5 oz)
- 8 slices of Swiss cheese (or other firm cheese, about 100g / 3.5 oz)
- 1/4 cup (30g / 1 oz) panko breadcrumbs
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) milk
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) Dijon mustard (optional)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Vegetable oil for frying (about 2 cups / 475 ml)
Instructions:
- Lay the ham slices flat on a clean work surface. Place one slice of cheese on each slice of ham.
- Roll the ham tightly around the cheese to form a firm cylinder.
- Cut each roll into 2 or 3 pieces, depending on your preferred size. You should have about 16 to 24 sticks.
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together the beaten egg, milk, and Dijon mustard (if using). Season with salt and pepper.
- Place the panko breadcrumbs in another shallow bowl.
- Dip each ham and cheese stick into the egg mixture, then coat it evenly with panko breadcrumbs.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep fryer to about 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the sticks in batches of 4 to 6, turning once, until golden and crispy (about 2–3 minutes per side).
- Remove the sticks from the oil and drain on paper towels.
- Serve hot and enjoy!

Tips:
- For a healthier version, bake the sticks at 400°F (200°C) for 15–20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- You can also use a light batter instead of breadcrumbs for a different texture.
