Ham and Cheese Sticks

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices of high-quality ham (about 100g / 3.5 oz)
  • 8 slices of Swiss cheese (or other firm cheese, about 100g / 3.5 oz)
  • 1/4 cup (30g / 1 oz) panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) Dijon mustard (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying (about 2 cups / 475 ml)

Instructions:

  1. Lay the ham slices flat on a clean work surface. Place one slice of cheese on each slice of ham.
  2. Roll the ham tightly around the cheese to form a firm cylinder.
  3. Cut each roll into 2 or 3 pieces, depending on your preferred size. You should have about 16 to 24 sticks.
  4. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the beaten egg, milk, and Dijon mustard (if using). Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Place the panko breadcrumbs in another shallow bowl.
  6. Dip each ham and cheese stick into the egg mixture, then coat it evenly with panko breadcrumbs.
  7. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep fryer to about 350°F (175°C).
  8. Fry the sticks in batches of 4 to 6, turning once, until golden and crispy (about 2–3 minutes per side).
  9. Remove the sticks from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  10. Serve hot and enjoy!

Estimated Calories per Stick: ~150
Yields: 16 sticks

Tips:

  • For a healthier version, bake the sticks at 400°F (200°C) for 15–20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • You can also use a light batter instead of breadcrumbs for a different texture.
