Basic Bread Dough Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 3 ½ cups (450g) all-purpose flour or bread flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet or 7g) active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar (optional, helps yeast activate)
  • 1 ¼ cups (300ml) warm water (about 110°F or 45°C)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (optional, for softness and flavor)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast (if using active dry yeast):
    • In a small bowl, mix warm water with sugar and yeast.
    • Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  2. Mix the Dough:
    • In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
    • Add the foamy yeast mixture and olive oil.
    • Mix until a rough dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough:
    • Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes (or use a mixer with a dough hook for 5–6 minutes) until smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise:
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap or a damp towel.
    • Let it rise in a warm area for about 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size (like in the image).
  5. Use or Bake:
    • Once risen, shape the dough as needed for bread, rolls, pizza, or other baked goods.
    • Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25–30 minutes (for a loaf), or as your recipe requires.
