German Chocolate Cake Recipe

🍰 For the Chocolate Cake:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (or 1/2 cup milk + 1/2 tbsp vinegar, let sit 5 mins)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter, add water and cocoa powder. Bring to a boil and remove from heat.
  3. In a bowl, mix sugar, flour, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Add cocoa mixture and stir until just combined.
  5. Mix in eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla until smooth.
  6. Divide batter into pans and bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Let cakes cool completely.

🥥 For the Coconut-Pecan Frosting:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/3 cups sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk together evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter.
  2. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened (about 10–12 minutes).
  3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla, coconut, and pecans.
  4. Let cool to room temperature before spreading.

🍫 Optional Chocolate Drizzle:

Melt 1/2 cup chocolate chips with 1 tsp coconut oil or butter and drizzle over the cake for a decorative finish.


To Assemble:

  1. Place one cake layer on a plate.
  2. Spread a generous amount of coconut-pecan frosting.
  3. Add the second layer and repeat.
  4. Drizzle chocolate over the top if desired.
