German Chocolate Cake Recipe
🍰 For the Chocolate Cake:
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup buttermilk (or 1/2 cup milk + 1/2 tbsp vinegar, let sit 5 mins)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a saucepan, melt butter, add water and cocoa powder. Bring to a boil and remove from heat.
- In a bowl, mix sugar, flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Add cocoa mixture and stir until just combined.
- Mix in eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla until smooth.
- Divide batter into pans and bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let cakes cool completely.
🥥 For the Coconut-Pecan Frosting:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 3 large egg yolks
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 1/3 cups sweetened shredded coconut
- 1 cup chopped pecans
Instructions:
- In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk together evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter.
- Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened (about 10–12 minutes).
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla, coconut, and pecans.
- Let cool to room temperature before spreading.
🍫 Optional Chocolate Drizzle:
Melt 1/2 cup chocolate chips with 1 tsp coconut oil or butter and drizzle over the cake for a decorative finish.
To Assemble:
- Place one cake layer on a plate.
- Spread a generous amount of coconut-pecan frosting.
- Add the second layer and repeat.
- Drizzle chocolate over the top if desired.
