Ingredients:

For the Apple Mixture:

4โ€“5 medium apples (like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and chopped

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1 tbsp lemon juice

1 tbsp flour (to thicken)

For the Cake Base:

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 cup milk (or buttermilk)

Optional Topping (for glossy finish):

2 tbsp melted butter

2 tbsp brown sugar

1/2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Grease and flour an 8ร—8 inch or 9ร—9 inch baking dish.

2. Prepare the apples:

Toss chopped apples with both sugars, cinnamon, lemon juice, and flour. Let sit while preparing the batter.

3. Make the cake batter:

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla.

In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.

Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with milk, mixing until just combined.

4. Assemble the cake:

Spread half the batter into the baking dish.

Layer all the apple mixture on top.

Spread the remaining batter on top as evenly as possible (itโ€™s okay if some apples peek through).

Optional: Brush with melted butter and sprinkle brown sugar-cinnamon topping.

5. Bake for 40โ€“50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean and the top is golden.

6. Cool slightly, slice, and enjoy warmโ€”optionally with vanilla ice cream!
