Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole
A warm, cheesy, and comforting twist on the classic dish—perfect for weeknights or family dinners!
Ingredients:
Main Casserole:
- 3 cups cooked chicken, shredded or diced (rotisserie chicken works great)
- 1 1/2 cups diced ham
- 2 cups shredded Swiss cheese (or a mix of Swiss and mozzarella)
- 1 cup (120g) breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
- 1/4 cup (30g) grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
Creamy Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups (360ml) milk
- 1/2 cup (120ml) chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven:
Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
2. Prepare the sauce:
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes until it bubbles slightly.
Gradually add the milk and chicken broth, whisking continuously to prevent lumps. Simmer for 3–5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
Stir in the Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat.
3. Assemble the casserole:
Spread the cooked chicken evenly in the prepared baking dish. Layer the diced ham on top.
Pour the warm sauce evenly over the chicken and ham. Sprinkle the shredded Swiss cheese over the top.
4. Make the topping:
In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, and melted butter. Mix well and sprinkle evenly over the cheese layer.
5. Bake:
Place the casserole in the oven and bake for 25–30 minutes, until hot and bubbly, with a golden-brown topping.
(For a crispier top, broil for 1–2 minutes at the end—watch closely!)
6. Garnish and serve:
Let the casserole cool for 5–10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley, if desired.
Tips:
- Add a pinch of smoked paprika or thyme to the sauce for extra flavor.
- Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave.
